HHMI Janelia Farm, hosted Eduard Serradell Domingo and Dan Ciresan. Eduard recently published his work on non-linear image volume registration across imaging modalities with graph-based methods at CVPR 2012, and Dan is the winner of the ISBI 2012 Challenge on Segmentation of neuronal structures in EM stacks. The challenge asked the participants to segment the cytoplasmatic membranes of the electron microscopical image volume of Drosophila larva brain neuropil that I prepared and segmented myself a few years ago. Dan's results have immediate applicability for my lab.

Obergurgl, Austria, participating in the PENS/Hertie Winter School 2008, which focuses on insect neuroanatomy and neural networks. The meeting was excellent. The 3-hour free time (a.k.a. ski sessions) every afternoon went a long way in providing fun and leisure hours to talk to each other. I joined the "Development of Neural Networks" workgroup, and our presentation consisted of a theater play depicting the topic of the workgroup from neurogenesis to multiple network interactions, including path finding, regeneration and all. Professors played along at our request and we all had a great time (Joachim Pflüger won't forget the red wine mediated neuromodulation for a while!) Art beats slide presentations any day.
